SOUND DESIGN
The following sound sample is from the University of North Carolina's production of Troy Women. This sample is from the preshow music. The director's concept was post-modern in nature. He articulated the timelessness of war and the devastation it created. He also mentioned he desired a pier/water for the sense of locale. This multi-track sample includes both locale identifiers, as well as war throughout the ages.
The following is a sample of underscoring from The Glass Menagerie at University of North Carolina in Wilmington, NC. Inspired by the Glass Armonica I choose sound samples in that genre to provide an eerie, yet harmonic soundscape. This sample was the cue for Laura alone after the dance.
During the University of North Carolina Wilmington's production(s) of The Room into The Bald Soprano, done as an evening of two, one act plays, we needed an intermission segue between these starkly different productions. This segue resolved the differences between both content and production style, helping our audiences transition into the world of each play. This is an abbreviated sample, transitioning from The Room into The Bald Soprano. The final song "House in the Suburbs" lead into the top of The Bald Soprano.
The following is the angel arriving sound effect for the University of North Carolina Wilmington's production of Angels in America. This is always a difficult effect to generate without disengaging the audience from the moment in the play.
This sample was produced for Marcellus Matters: Engaging Adults in Science and Energy Performance Project as part of Community Conversations Project, National Science Foundation Grant. This particular piece was ten minutes in length featuring this underscore and video, with a presenter reading interviews of varying viewpoints with regard to fracking in the region. This underscoring was generated, and the foundation for the rest of the performance elements. Conceptually, we wanted to incorporate field recordings of fracking activity, using actual sounds from the mining operation, as well as supporting operations such as water transportation trucks. To counter-point, tracks were added of children and sounds of nature from the area. Finally we wanted to incorporate a music track. After laying in the first track, a second music track weaving in a folk sound to add to the history of resource harvesting and the impact on local inhabitants. The intent of this piece was to avoid inserting our personal feelings about fracking, rather to neutrally present the voice of the various parties involved.
